SAW BILL passes in MN 2019 Session

In the Minnesota Legislative Session of 2019, SAW legislation known as safety around water was passed and signed by Governor Tim Waltz.

This bill will provide funding to organizations that provide safety around water swim instruction with a focus on kids in the inner-city and rural communities that may not have had an opportunity to learn to swim.  Organizations like the YMCA will be able to leverage $100,000 from the State of Minnesota over two years to provide water safety instruction.

The Minnesota Alliance of YMCAs focused on getting this bill passed since 2018 with a goal of reaching 10,000 kids in the land of 10,000 lakes through a proposed state initiative focused on bringing families together, improving kid's health, and reducing injuries and fatalities from drowning in Minnesota.

Many are surprised to hear that drowning is the second (only to car crashes) leading cause of death and injury among children ages 1 -14 years old.  Each year approximately 830 children die as a result of unintentional drowning, nearly 3 deaths each and every day of the year.
